4 Skills

4.0.1 Software

I have experience in a number of computer software’s. As part of my Master’s course, and subsequent role as a research assistant, I became competent in using Microsoft Excel and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to perform data management and statistical analysis. I also have experience using Actilife and Kinesoft to initialize, download and analyse accelerometer data. Since beginning my PhD, I have begun teaching myself the programming language R. I am now competent in performing data management and statistical analysis using this language and intend to progress my knowledge further by developing skills in utilizing machine learning techniques in the future.

4.0.2 Teamwork

As part of my multiple sporting commitments I am confident in working with a diverse range of groups effectively. Throughout these commitments, I have also taken on leadership roles in order to support team members. For example, during my time playing for Loughborough University volleyball club I was captain for 1 year which I have found to strengthen both my teamwork, and leadership, skills even further.

4.0.3 Communication

In addition to the communication skills developed during playing a team sport; I have also developed my communication skills throughout my dissertation project. This School based research project required me to communicate effectively, and in a diverse manner, with a range of people including children, teachers and parents, in order to promote physical activity within schools. I assumed the role of Course Representative which has involved me communicating the views of the course to course leaders and other academics.

4.0.4 Time management

Throughout my University studies I completed a range of extra-curricular activities including both playing and coaching volleyball at a British University Championships (BUCs) level. I also aided in collecting data during the Myzone Validation study and performed inter-device validity assessments of accelerometer devices. Performing all these roles simultaneously led me to developing strong time management and organisational skills which I can bring to any role.
